Catford Schools and Colleges

Catford Schools are all located in the London Borough of Lewisham. We advise local and family historians to also look for schools in nearby Bellingham, Hither Green, Rushey Green and Southend, all of which share the same post-code of SE6 with Catford.

School and Colleges Admission and Discharge registers are an under-used resource. They give the dates of admission and discharge, date of birth, the school attended prior or subsequently, address of student, guardian, and, if lucky, more personal info.

FamLoc lists Catford schools and colleges, include info about admission and discharge registers, and include a map link of the schools locations.

Some Catford schools were named after a nearby main road; please note the school may not actually be in that road. Similarly, the address given directly after the name of the school need not necessarilly be the actual address.
Some schools had a change of name (typically from a street name), or the same school name was used in different locations at different times.

Remember that the school or college attended might not be in the same town as the student lived.

We welcome input into Catford schools from local and family historians.

Thanks to John Payne for the following on Plassy Road School:

Your website says that you do not know the exact location of Plassy Road school. I
went there from Autumn 1949 to Summer 1956 before moving on to Colfe's Grammar
school which was then in Lewisham before the move to the sports ground and a new
building in Lee.

Plassy Road School was located in the bottom right corner of the "Catford Gyratory"
as orientated on your map opposite Engleheart Road. It was bounded on two sides by
Plassy Road and Sangley Road. It extended about one third or half of the way from
Sangley Road to Brownhill Road and about the same proportion from Plassy Road to
Rushey Green. The entrance was beyond Engleheart Road towards Brownhill Road.
Entrance was directly into the tarmac playground which opened up behind the school.
Boys and separate girls, outside toilet blocks (no roof!) were on the right side as
the playground opened up. There was a "shed" in the far left corner against the
perimeter wall so there was a wall on the left long side and the far side which was
shorter. The other two sides were open allowing easy access in rain and the
playground monitor teacher to see what was going on.

Beyond the school was an open hard area where coaches were parked. The ticket office
and passenger entry were in Rushey Green and an access road ran from the hard
standing under the shops to Rushey Green.

The school changed its name to Rushey Green School while I was there, I think around
the Coronation time. I can remember an announcement in class in 1952 that the "old
king" had died and the coronation the next year. A web search shows that Rushey
green School is now in Culverley Road approximately opposite the old banana
distributors warehouse. I have no idea when the school moved, I didn't know it had.

I remember school trips to Sandown on the Isle of Wight and also Lyme Regis another
year where one of the boys came down with mumps and was isolated in the bungalows we
were staying in attached to a hotel.

Thanks for the trigger of memory which started with a query from Colfe's historian
as to which school I went to before Colfe's.
