Plumstead Schools and Colleges

School and Colleges Admission and Discharge registers are an under-used resource. They give the dates of admission and discharge, date of birth, the school attended prior or subsequently, address of student, guardian, and, if lucky, more personal info.

FamLoc lists Plumstead schools and colleges, include info about admission and discharge registers, and include a map link of the schools locations.

Some schools were names after a nearby main road; please note the school may not actually be in that road. Similarly, the address given directly after the name of the school need not necessarilly be the actual address.
Some schools had a change of name (typically from a street name), or the same school name was used in different locations at different times.

Remember that the school or college attended might not be in the same town as the student lived.

Plumstead Schools — 7 Comments

    • Thanks, Deborah.
Most schools have had a change of name, and when in a long road, it is difficult to establish sometimes if differently named schools at different times are the same school site. Please do add more info – it all helps to build a more rounded history of Plumstead.

  1. Hi
Looking at the ‘London P’ map from 1938 – see http://maps.nls.uk/view/102345888 – there were several schools in the area.

Earl Street / Elm Street / Brewery Road.

Ancona Road / Tuscan Street/ Heavitree Road.

Gallosson Road – definitely Conway Infants and Junior Mixed – I attended there!

    High Street and Bannockburn Road.

Finally – there is mention of ‘Schls’, note the plural, between Orchard Road, Conway Road, Mineral Street and the High Street. Perhaps because there was more than one school, this has caused some confusion. The map is from 1938, by the early 1960s Orchard Road was an extension of Ancona Road – that’s what I knew it as.

The smaller of the two schools was later to become Griffin Manor PH School – the PH being Physical Handicapped – and catered for children with all manner of disabilities. The National Archive says the school existed from 1943. My father was school keeper from the early 60s until its closure in 1966 – we lived in a house in the school grounds, adjacent to the High Street. In 1966 the school combined with two similar schools in south east London, moving to a purpose built establishment in a corner of Charlton Park, on the corner of Cemetery Lane. My father became school keeper there – promotion!

Further up the hill, south on the map, was the bombed out remains of the second school, name unknown. The gap between the two buildings was a huge playground, but split in half by a picket type fence, to make ‘child management’ easier.

Beyond the bombed building was the ‘top playground’ and another building containing engineering and woodwork workshops. These facilities were used by boys of one of the local senior schools. There was a passageway from Ancona/Orchard Road into the school grounds.

The location of Griffin Manor School is incorrect on your map, it needs to be where Mount Pleasant Place is now.

Griffin Manor School lived on in name at Swingate Lane, closing in 2001.

    • Thanks again, Andy.
We will update our info soon.

  2. Ancona Rd School became Waverley School and eventually amalgamated with Kings Warren and Church Manor Way to form Plumstead Manor.

Orchard Rd School was originally Plumstead Road School – my grandmother attended from 1913.

Plumcroft (as it is now) originally two schools – an Elementary and secondary school. The boys secondary school (lower building) amalgamated with Bloomfield. The elementary school became Plumcroft JMI and then Primary School using all of the buildings. The address is Plum Lane, but the office entrance is in Genesta Rd. A new annexe will be built shortly in Vincent Road, Woolwich.

Plumstead Central School (not Woolwich) in St Margaret’s Grove is now St Margaret’s Primary School.

Shooters Hill School, Red Lion Lane, was a grammar school. This became Eaglesfield Comprehensive and is now Shooters Hill 6th Form Campus.

Gallions Mount School was formerly Purrett Road School, having been rebuilt following bomb damage.

The top floor and roof of High Street School was destroyed by an incendiary bomb. It was patched up and renamed Bannockburn School. Bannockburn and Church Manor Way are now a much larger Bannockburn Primary School (expanded from 1 1/2 to 5 form entry). A summary of the history of both schools (written by yours truly)can be found on the Bannockburn School website: bannockburnprimaryschool.com/

Earl street School (in Brewery Road) became Earl Rise and then South Rise Primary School.

The Slade School became a school for children with learning difficulties. When it reverted to a mainstream primary school, it was renamed Greenslade School. It was the first London Board School in Plumstead and was built on common land.

St Patrick’s playground used to be on the roof! It has extended into St Patick’s church (school hall). St Patrick’s church is now in Hector St.

The schools at Charlton Park and Swingate Lane (address Welton Road) were what evolved from the Open Air School (pilot at Shornell’s, Bostall Heath, then Shrewsbury Park and finally at Charlton Park).

Another school is Burrage Grove School. This was taken over by the Community College (Evening Institute) for several years. It is now an annexe of Heronsgate (serving Thamesmead and Broadwater).

  3. Behind St James church Was a bombed school it was at the top of Maxey rd roughly where The T is in Eton Grove, Can you tell me what its name was and when it was bombed. I think I was supposed to go there but ended up at Bloomfield for a couple of years.

  4. The school behind St James was, originally, Church Terrace Pupil Teachers Training Centre, then Woolwich Pupil Teachers Training Centre and, finally, Maxey Road School, which fell victim to a high explosive bomb in WW2.
